Adam Smith, PhD, is a Senior Director in the Patient-Centered Outcomes Assessment group, based in RTI-HS’s Manchester office in the United Kingdom, and has over 25 years of experience in patient-reported outcome (PRO) research. Prior to joining RTI-HS, Dr. Smith held a number of positions in health economics and outcomes research in industry, consultancy, and academia.
Dr. Smith has extensive experience in psychometrics, including Rasch and item-response theory, to evaluate PROs in clinical trials, as well as (electronic) PRO instrument development and validation. He has worked in a wide range of therapeutic areas, including, but not limited to allergy, dermatitis, diabetes, obesity, oncology, and rare paediatric conditions (e.g., AADC deficiency, spinal muscular atrophy).
Dr Smith also has considerable expertise in statistics in both clinical research and clinical trials. He has significant experience and a keen interest in heath utility elicitation, including time–trade-off and standard gamble tasks, as well as discrete-choice experiments.
Dr. Smith has published widely with over 90 peer-reviewed journal publications and presented his research at professional, scientific, and academic conferences. He has served on the editorial board for the journals Quality of Life Research, BMC Medical Research Methodology, and Health and Quality of Life Outcomes and is currently the statistical editor for the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, an appointment he has held since 2013.
