A large pharmaceutical company approached RTI Health Solutions as it was getting ready to roll out a new, life-changing treatment for psoriasis. One of their challenges was how to show how much patients improved and which patients were most likely to improve using multiple patient-reported outcomes measures. We used novel analytic methods to examine changes in patients’ symptoms of psoriasis and health-related quality of life using data from three clinical trials. Employing growth models and related techniques, we could use all available data across time to examine changes in multiple outcomes simultaneously and explore subsets of patients who showed differential changes. Standard analytic approaches would not allow us to address research questions like this. Applying this kind of academic rigor to move valuable treatments forward to help patients is very exciting. These analyses resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications and more than a dozen presentations at professional meetings.
